Taking and Giving Consciousness

So, I was thinking how Walter Russell, subject of the book The Man Who Tapped the Secrets of the Universe by Glenn Clark, when offered money to give up his place in line for tickets, instead got the divine inspiration to offer “I’ll do you one better. I’ll pick up the tickets for you, and then deliver them.” Thus starting a little enterprise. It is because of his giving consciousness that he even received such an idea. A closed, fearful “taking” mind would have taken the money for the single transaction, and that would be that. The “giving” mind perceives giving opportunities, and thus creates opportunities — or the channels through which to abundantly receive. This is perhaps why Jesus stressed giving, because the practice of giving tilts the mind towards the giving consciousness, and thus positioning it to receive such prosperity-laden ideas.

Catch your Thumb

Operating from the “taking” consciousness results in exactly opposite of what you desire. Instead of getting more, this “stinginess” actually causes you to wind up with less.

It’s a bit like trying to catch your thumb — with the same hand. Try this simple exercise. Extend your right hand as if preparing for a handshake. Keep your thumb pointed upwards. Now with your left hand, grasp the upturned thumb. Now the game begins: you are to take your left hand and swiftly grab the protruding thumb before it disappears. Of course, when you go to grab you’ll just find the hole made by your closed-fist left hand where your right-thumb used to be. You might think “try faster,” and so you do. But no matter how fast you are, you can never catch the thumb.

Of course you can’t! But the taking mind cannot understand this. So full it is of the fear of losing what it has, it would never contemplate just letting the left hand hold the thumb — a sharing arrangement that is mutually beneficial. This is what we do with our abundance. By believing our good comes only of and through ourselves we “chase our tail”, or grasp for our thumb… forever cut off from the source. Whereas when we relinquish the ego idea of being in control, and place ourself in the helping hand of spirit, we are then connected to our source, and our prosperity is then limitless.

So the next time you are presented with the opportunity for a “quick grab,” pause and reflect for a moment on how you can “open your fist” to give, and thereby receive even more.
